The world is for thousands a freak show; the images flicker past and vanish; the impressions remain flat and unconnected in the soul. Thus they are easily led by the opinions of others, are content to let their impressions be shuffled and rearranged and evaluated differently.

I agree in many ways. But, thanks to the right-wing press, there *are* some things you can't say about immigration. You can't say it's not that big a problem. You can't say it's inevitable in a global economy. You can't say you aren't going to be tough. Any suggestion that you would allow or - god forbid - encourage future immigration has become political suicide, thanks to the daily diet of Little England xenophobia peddled by the likes of the Daily Mail and The Sun. That is why we don't get a sensible debate about immigration.
