I'm 42 and this is the first time I've voted. I have always been very political and the reasons I haven't voted before have never stemmed from apathy but from hatred... Hatred of the way my vote would never count (I was too young to vote against Thatcher in 79 and have only lived in very safe left wing constituencies). My politics are way left of New Labour and so there isn't any realistic hope of me agreeing with more than about 20% of the policies of even the most left parties in Britain. However I do understand the realities of mainstream politics and that the best chance we have of ensuring an even half-decent society is if we can get at least a semi-progressive party into power. New Labour were nowhere near my ideal but they at least pushed this country forward a little. And so, for the first time this year, I voted. I voted for one reason only... To keep the tories (and other right wing bastards) out. It's looking like a waste of time. The waste of time I always suspected it was. This will probably be the first and last time I vote. Progressive democracy is a nice idea but not sustainable in a country which is controlled by the likes of Rupert Murdoch and predominantly populated by the greedy rich, the undereducated and the barely literate. I dream of a bloodless, progressive revolution but it is extremely unlikely. I fear that this is an island perpetually destined to take one step forward, two steps back. I don't have an answer.
