When distant and unfamiliar and complex things are communicated to great masses of people, the truth suffers a considerable and often a radical distortion. The complex is made over into the simple, the hypothetical into the dogmatic, and the relative into an absolute.

Someone's dead? Let's bash 'elf and safety! PDF Print E-mail

One thing you can rely on with Mail readers is their predictably horrible nature. At 1.10am this morning a poster on Mailwatch linked to a story on the Mail website about a 16 year old girl who died sledging. Now, this is a sad story about a 16 year old girl who hit a wooden fence whilst sledging and died after sustaining 'massive' head injuries; a friend also on the upturned car bonnet is critically ill in hospital. At 1.10am this morning the poster on Mailwatch predicted that some Mail readers would use this sad accident as an excuse to bash 'elf-and-safety' or make otherwise tasteless remarks.

It didn't take long.

At 3.32am the first poster didn't disappoint (and as the time suggests, it is an 'ex-pat' commenting):

After this tragic accident when is sledging to be banned under health and safety?

Thankfully the comment is 299 in the red, but normally sensible posts on many topics are downrated far more than this. But what a fucking twat. Really, what is the point in this comment? If Health and Safety had been involved in the incident, then actually they probably would have pointed out the dangers of sledging at great speed (Mail states up to 50mph) down a hill on a car roof without a helmet, any way of stopping or steering. Health and Safety is designed to make everyday situations safer, just because occasionally you take offence at some over-zealous (or overly fearful) council or school or any other urban myth type situation where Health and Safety 'goes mad' etc doesn't mean that Health and Safety is bad per se.

And anyway, this is not a fitting place to make a cheap jibe at Health and Safety you heartless fuck.

But he's not the only twat able to use the internet:

Close the park and ban sledges and sledging immediately before another child is killed, snowballing should also be banned, the Nu-lab health and safety exec know whats best for everyone

'elf and safety will be banning this now...

So sad. My condolenses to her family

But you can see what H&S will do now:
sledging approved helmets, gloves, lumbar & neck supports, sledging equipment approval documents, sledging licences, permission from landowners, accident insurance, personal injury disclaimers ....

Awful. A pity that her school was not open, she would have been safe there. One for the risk-averse Council jobsworths to ponder.

Well said Mike, schools are normally to blame for most things that happen to young people you twat.

And of course, some Mail readers find something else entirely to have a dig at:

Jack Straw looks ridiculous....well, he is!

Haha, Jack Straw Looks exactly like a communist wearing that head gear, finally the cold weather has allowed them to look like their Communist idols.

Condolences to the family of Francesca.

What wonderful human beings. To quote another worthless individual: 'Now, where's my handcart?'
