Trying to determine what is going on in the world by reading newspapers is like trying to tell the time by watching the second hand of a clock.

I've added a new article on Richard Littlejohn: Richard Littlejohn is a coward and a snippet: Suri Cruise in danger of having a lifetime under scrutiny.

Martin Belam over at Currybetdotnet has been covering the Alfie Patten case and has brought up the ludicrious way in which the PCC dismisses complaints made by a third party: The PCC turns a deaf ear to complaints about press coverage of Alfie Patten:

It astounds me that we currently have a system of regulation which means that a person can write to the PCC and say "I think that one of the publications covered by your code has breached a legal court order and is in contempt of court" and the official response is not "Of course we will take your complaint seriously, look into that, and keep you informed about what happens". Instead, the official response is: "It doesn't concern you so mind your own business"

qwghlm has an update on The (New) Daily Mail Oncological Ontology Project, a project devoted to tracking “the Daily Mail’s classification of inanimate objects into two types: those that cause cancer, and those that cure it.”:

For the period January 12th (when I started the Tumblelog) to February 14th (34 days, inclusive), there were 26 cancer scare or cure stories on the Daily Mail website (that’s 0.76 a day). In the same time period - i.e. 34 days - afterward, from February 15th (up to & including March 21st) there were 14 (only 0.41 a day). In fact, in the month of March entirely, there were only 9 (0.29 a day).

What happened on February 14th?

Visit this post to find out what caused the sudden drop in cancer scare stories.

Meanwhile Liz Jones was even more hateful and ignorant than usual a couple of days ago: I hate these crusties, with their droppy dyed skirts and boiled wool cardigans. It is amazing how she follows this:

I went to Glastonbury last summer... I received lots of odd looks from the crusties as they regarded the square of black bin bag I took everywhere just to stand on, clutching my Prada handbag.

With this gem:

But the whole event was to me an illustration of the worst aspects of capitalism: expensive rubbish dressed up as something soul-enriching, cultural [emphasis added]

I wonder if Liz Jones realises just how applicable the second paragraph is to Prada handbags? Probably not aware at all, as Liz's values are of course, perfectly natural and healthy, it is everyone else that is wrong. I rather like a post on Mailwatch from 'Admirable Chrichton' regarding the average Liz Jones column:

Yes its another memorable trip up the mindfuck motorway, with your able driver Liz Jones!!

Sums it up very nicely.

Meanwhile a Mail article has attracted one of the most insane posts I have ever seen [via Mailwatch]. The story: Airshow horror as biplane takes off without pilot and crashes into trees:

Hundreds of visitors to an air show watched in horror as a runaway vintage biplane sped along the ground at 60mph, soared into the air and then crashed into trees.

Terrified onlookers saw the £50,000 plane 'run amok' on the airfield after it was started without a pilot in the cockpit.

For more than five minutes the plane sped round in circles as bystanders feared it could career their way or into other aircraft.

The Mail reader's reponse:

Jenny Jones is mad

Still, it is far better than the blatant racism so often let through by the Mail moderators.

Apologies for jumping the gun there and for any harshness in my tone.

I'm a sensitive old tit.

Peace.

My comment was sarcastic, but I thought that would not come across in a comment! Apologies.

I've read your blog for a while, so I know your comment was not serious, but I guess you didn't know that either.

As a teacher I know you wouldn't possibly want to use a stun gun or baton on children (although I did some supply teaching for 5 months and would have happily used a stun gun on many occasions in some schools).

Just so you know, I'm a born and bred liberal Guardian reader.

Just with complex views, rather than knee-jerk black and white takes on issues because it's not about following what you should believe but what you actually believe.

You do know the baton charge and stun gun usage on the kids was a joke don't you?

Lovely.
