Another day, another pointless article bemoaning 'elf 'n' safety': Now strawberry picking faces health and safety threat. Naturally the headline on the front page of the Daily Mail website uses the classier Littlejohnism 'elf 'n' safety' to draw readers in, and naturally readers don't actually read the article they simply add mindless comments like:
Ah, what a good way to start the day, a good long laugh from the HSE zealots.

H&S is a repressive regime that stifles the population and its freedoms, while serving to propogate the 'it's someone else's fault' mentality. Still, it's re-assuring to know that while we have a 10% of chance of contracting life threatening MRSA while in hospital, at least we have been spared the prospect of serious injury while picking strawberries in Cornwall.

I wonder how pensioners will deal with this when health n safety morons ban them from using their allotments? Oh well, not long to go till the next General Election

Of course, had they actually read the article they would realise that:
The Boddington family of Tregoney Hill near Mevagissey have called a halt to their pick-your-own business after an elderly woman filed an insurance claim last year over a fall that left her in hospital - the farm's second injury in 40 years in the pick-your-own business.
Louise Boddington, 43, who runs the 20-acre farm with husband Phil, said they were asked to make so many changes by an insurance firm representative that the extra costs outweighed any profits.
Oh, so it was actually an insurance firm trying to avoid paying compensation to people incurring injuries. The HSE did not actually play any part in this story, apart from generally being the agency that tries to stop injuries from occurring to people (what an evil organisation). Naturally the rest of the article is hyperbole like:
Jim Dart, of Darts Farm near Exeter, Devon, said: 'The situation has not arisen for us but it sends shivers down your spine. When people come on to the farm they are walking along farm tracks and hopefully it is safe, but accidents can happen.'
So Jim Dart admits it has not affected him yet, and presumably if his insurers are satisfied that his farm is appropriate for public access then he won't be affected either.
This is just a classic example of the Daily Mal taking one isolated example - that in this case isn't even directly attributable to the HSE - and screaming that 'elf 'n' safety' is trying to ban another innocent past time. I for one fully intend to 'pick-my-own' at my local farms, which - according to their signs - seem to have not been affected by this latest 'HSE ban'. Another triumph for the Daily Mail Reporter and the Daily Mail misinformation campaign. |
Once a year the CEOs gather around a long table in an underground control centre while the Number 1 of the HSE sits at its head stroking a white cat and instructing them as to the premiums they should set and the conditions attached to them.
